How to tell if someone is online on WhatsApp
Seeing whether a WhatsApp contact is online takes a second once you know where to look, and there are a few things the word does not mean.
To check if someone is online on WhatsApp, open the chat with them and look just under their name at the top. If they have the app open right now, it reads online. If not, it shows a last seen time instead, or nothing.
What online means, and what it does not
"Online" means WhatsApp is open on their phone at that moment. It does not mean they are chatting with you, or with anyone; they could be reading a status or another chat. For how this relates to the last seen time, see what last seen means.
Will they know you checked?
No. WhatsApp does not tell anyone that you opened their chat or looked at their online status. Looking is invisible. The only thing that can notify them is a read receipt (blue ticks) when you actually open a message they sent.
Why you might not see online at all
If the status line is blank, their privacy settings may hide online and last seen from you, you may have hidden your own, they may have blocked you, or you may never have chatted. The full list is in last seen not showing.
Seeing it without watching the chat
Checking by hand means opening the chat again and again, and you still only catch the live moment. A tracker does the watching: WaPulse follows the numbers you add, alerts you when one comes online, and keeps every session so you can see their online times for the day instead of refreshing.
Common questions
Can I see if someone is online without opening the chat?
WhatsApp shows the status inside the chat, so you have to open it. A tracker like WaPulse can tell you without opening anything.
Does online mean they are talking to someone?
No. It only means WhatsApp is open on their phone. They may not be in any chat.
Will WhatsApp tell them I checked their online status?
No. Viewing someone’s online status is never notified. Only opening their message and showing blue ticks tells them anything.
