WhatsApp last seen not showing, or online not appearing
When a contact shows no last seen or never seems to be online, it is almost always one of a few specific reasons. Here is how to tell which.
If a WhatsApp contact shows no last seen and never appears online, nothing is broken. WhatsApp is simply not making that activity public to you, and there is a short list of reasons why.
They hid their last seen
In Settings › Privacy › Last seen and online, anyone can set last seen to Nobody, My contacts, or My contacts except. If you are not in the group they chose, you see nothing. This is the most common reason, and from the outside it looks the same as a block.
You hid your own last seen
WhatsApp makes last seen reciprocal: if you set your own last seen to Nobody, you cannot see anyone else’s either. If you turned yours off and then noticed everyone’s went blank, this is why. Turning your own back on restores theirs. The steps are in how to turn off last seen.
They never shared it with strangers
WhatsApp hides last seen and online by default from people you have never chatted with. If you have no message history with a number, you may see nothing until a conversation exists.
They blocked you
A block also hides last seen, online, profile photo and read receipts. A blank last seen on its own does not prove a block, because a privacy setting looks identical; it is the combination of several of these signs together that points to a block.
Why online never shows for one contact
The "online" state follows the same settings. If someone set "last seen and online" so that you are excluded, you will never catch them online no matter how often you check. Does no last seen mean I am blocked?
Not on its own. A privacy setting looks the same. A block usually also hides the profile photo and stops ticks going beyond one grey tick for your messages.
Why did everyone’s last seen disappear at once?
You most likely set your own last seen to Nobody. WhatsApp then hides everyone’s from you until you turn yours back on.
Can an app show last seen that WhatsApp hides?
No. If last seen is hidden, the activity is not public, so there is nothing for any tool to record or show.
