What does "last seen" mean on WhatsApp?
Last seen is one of the most-looked-at lines in WhatsApp and one of the least explained. Here is exactly what it tells you, and what it does not.
On WhatsApp, last seen is the time a person was last active in the app, shown under their name at the top of the chat, for example "last seen today at 14:32". It means the moment they last had WhatsApp open, not the last time they read your message and not where they were.
Last seen vs online
The same line shows online instead of a time while the person has WhatsApp open right now. The instant they close it, WhatsApp replaces "online" with a last seen time again. Why last seen is sometimes missing
If you see no last seen at all under a name, it is usually one of these: the person has set their last seen to nobody or to a group that excludes you, you have set your own last seen to nobody (WhatsApp makes this reciprocal, so hiding yours hides theirs from you), they have blocked you, or you have never exchanged a message. Does last seen mean they read my message?
No. Last seen only means they opened WhatsApp, not that they opened your chat or read anything. Read receipts are the two blue ticks, which are separate from last seen and can be turned off on their own.
Can I see earlier last seen times?
WhatsApp itself keeps only the latest one; each time the person is active, the previous time is gone.
